Carnival ‘brings Coral Coast community together’

SIGATOKA advisory council president Shalendra Kumar believes the one-week Coral Coast Carnival has provided a good opportunity to highlight important issues.

He said it offered service providers a chance to help or work with the Sigatoka community.

“This carnival is not only for enjoyment, but to bring together people of all races, ages and genders,” he said.

“If we are in a position to reach out at community level, such as helping the poor and needy or helping community projects, we should not hesitate to provide an extra hand.

“That is what service before self is all about.”

Sigatoka Town Council CEO Tulsi Ram said part of the proceeds collected for the carnival’s charity trust would go towards Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston victims.

He said while most of Sigatoka was spared from the super cyclone, the townspeople shared in the loss suffered by those who fell victim to Severe TC Winston.

“We did not set a target, but when we were organising the carnival we promised that some of the money raised for the charity trust would go towards the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund,” he said. “We wanted to contribute towards the rebuilding of our country.”
