Bleaching in Fiji coastal corals the worst this century

Scientists estimate about half the coral in the protected reefs along Fiji’s coast have been bleached, as the world’s oceans continue to heat up from the combined impacts of El Nino and climate change.

Victor Bonito, the director of Reef Explorer Fiji, says the bleaching is the worst to affect the country since the last global event 16 years ago.

And Mr Bonito is warning Pacific nations to take action to ensure their reefs remain sustainable, because he fears the marine life that helped damaged corals to recover last time may be in decline.
