86 women become solvent by rearing cattle in two Khulna upazilas

KHULNA, May 20: About Tk 30 million interest-free loan has been distributed among 250 men and women in two upazilas of Khulna district under the project of Poverty Eradication And Socio Economic Development through Expanding Dairy Co-operative Society.

The Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry is implementing the project through District Co-operative Office, Khulna in Dumuria and Paikgacha upazilas.

The project is also running in greater Faridpur and Barisal districts. The aim of the initiative is to provide assistances and inspire the marginal unemployed people, especially women for cattle farming.

Paikgacha and Dumuria upazilas of Khulna were taken under the project in the last year. Each cattle farmer was provided Tk 0.11 million. A little amount of money has been taken as service charge for only two years.

Deputy Assistant Regis-trar of District Cooperative Office Md Aman Ullah said about 86 women of the said upazilas have already changed their socio-economic condition by cattle rearing. Around 2700 litres of milk are being produced from 298 cows per day in the two upazilas.

Mt Ullah said ‘Milk Vita’ is taking a portion of the produced milk and the rest is being sold in the local market.

He also said the loan will also be provided to 175 more cattle farmers of Dumuria Upazila this year to increase the number of beneficiaries.
